Here is a little sneak peak into my latest project: The Fires of Alexandria will be a new adult science fiction novel I started working on a few years ago. This is the opening of one of the chapers.
We are the Fires of Alexandria. We breathe the same air as humans do. We feel with them. We observe. We learn. We understand. We know. But we can do nothing to stop them from making mistakes. This is our curse. But we are here for them, giving them warmth, so they can learn and understand the world. Perhaps so they can make fewer mistakes in the future.
Sometimes we cast shadows into the past, seeing things long gone. And sometimes our flames even flicker into the future, seeing fleeting moments that have a chance of coming true. Some we approve of. Some we hope to see. Some we hope will never come to pass. Some we know are inevitable.
When the warmth of our flames radiated into the distant past, we learned that some impacts change the world immediately and forever. Sixty-six million years ago one collision changed the course of this world’s history: The dinosaurs that ruled the Earth for the longest time were gone. It didn’t happen slowly or over time. It was fast and final. Their disappearance made it possible for humans to evolve over millions of years.
Large impacts change the world completely. For a very long time, we thought this was the only way that things could change. But there can also be small impacts that can change the course of history. The simple thought of one human can be as powerful as an asteroid hitting the planet. The breaking of a heart can create ripples, causing tidal waves and sparking fires that consume this world. We are the Fires of Alexandria. We breathe the same air as humans do. We feel with them. We observe. We learn. We understand. We know.
